Region I Safe Communities:

A Safe Community is defined as a community that promotes injury prevention activities to address local highway, traffic safety, and impaired driving as well as under age drinking. It uses a “Grassroots” approach involving citizens to address key injury problems. Components of CAP’s Safe Communities programming include:

Seat Belt Safety

Educating adults and youth on the importance of seatbelt use including the proper way to wear a seat belt and vehicle safety. The coalition participates in worksite safety belt programs, high school safety belt programs, and targeted programs by NHTSA and DOT during key months such as Buckle Up America and May Mobilization.Annually the coalition has an Appreciation Picnic to honor Safety Leaders in our community.

Child Restraint Safety

Teaches adults how to properly use child safety seats, which seat works best in their vehicle and for their child, teaches parents how to use anchor and tethers and general information about seat belt systems, booster seats, and recall lists for child passenger seats. The Coalition participates in Child Passenger Safety Month activities in February and May and conducts many child passenger safety seat checks.Education of parents and school age children is ongoing.

Bicycle/Pedestrian Safety

The Safe Communities Coalition supports the local PD with the annual Bike Rodeo.Bicycle helmets are distributed along with information on safe biking.

Alcohol Beverage Server Training

To assist bar or liquor store personnel in detecting or deterring underage purchase or consumption of alcohol, to assist personnel in complying with the law, to heighten the awareness of the use of fake or false ID use, to teach the proper procedure to deal with an underage drinker or underage person attempting to purchase, and detection of and intervention with intoxicated persons.

Alcohol Risk Reduction (Alcohol Compliance Checks)

Current research shows that effective and regular compliance checks will help decrease alcohol sales to minors; help reduce underage drinking; help reduce traffic crashes, violence, and other health problems associated with alcohol; and help build healthier and safer communities. Region 1 Safe Communities supports local Law Enforcement with this effort.

Victim Impact Panel

The Victim Impact Panel provides a means whereby drunk drivers and potential drunk drivers (DUI, MIP, and MIC) hear what happens to the victim of drunken driving crashes.A victim speaks briefly about the drunk driving crash in which they were injured or a loved one was injured or killed and what this has meant to them and how it changed their lives.

Lights On For Life – 3D Month

The Lights on For Life Procession is an annual event held during the month of December. This procession is a culmination of events held throughout 3D month as part of the National Campaign for Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month. Many activities lead to the awareness of the public about keeping impaired drivers off the road.

Kid ID Program

Held every other year, this program in conjunction with businesses in town photo and fingerprint young people in the schools to keep a record of them for quick reference in the case of an abduction or if a child goes missing. The records are held at the police station.
